The 1984 Avon High School Girls Cross Country team remains one of the most accomplished teams in Falcons’ history. Built on teamwork, dedication, with shared commitment to excellence, the team became a premier girls cross country program in Connecticut. Coach Richard Hadden led the 1984 team, with captains Melissa Dues-Elliott and Patricia (Kuhl) McDowell, and runners Gail Gately Smith, Cathy Desmond Eustis, Elizabeth (Lisa Kirwan) McClain, Rose (Buckanavage) Rapp, and Christine (Pappalardo) Greif.
Leading up to the season, teammates bonded on summer runs along the Avon trails, Hollister hill training runs, and track workouts. Under Coach Hadden’s guidance, they trained with discipline. He emphasized strength, reminding them to always finish and never give up. The team’s unity and consistent training produced remarkable results.
In the 1984 season, Avon completed the dual-meet schedule with a perfect 18-0 record and then pulled off what the Hartford Courant (12/20/84) called “the upset of the 1980s,” dethroning Montville in the Class M Championship. Ten days later, Avon won the CIAC State Open with 154 points, finishing well ahead of Montville’s 250 points at Wickham Park. The victory ended Montville’s three-year run as State Open champions and marked a defining moment in the program’s history.
Avon’s success came from the strength and depth of its runners. Coach Hadden described their pack strategy: “we have eight to nine runners tied together, roughly a minute apart.” Many remember the impact of racing together, decked in yellow shorts and navy tops. The bright color became a source of motivation as it reinforced their unity along the race-course. This shared identity and pack strategy propelled the Falcons to victory.
Coach Hadden strategized with each runner supporting everyone’s contribution to the win. Reflecting on one race, he told The Bulletin (9/20/84): “We were trying to get an idea of what our times would have to be to beat Montville and East Catholic. We ran to win, but we still would have learned if we didn’t.” His words reflected the growth mindset he instilled—focused on learning, perseverance, and continuous improvement.
The 1984 team is remembered for its championships, and friendships formed on and off the Avon trails. This foundation guided continued success, as Gail, Cathy, Elizabeth, Rose, and Christine returned in 1985, capturing Class M and CIAC State Open titles for a second straight year. This accomplishment established Avon as a powerhouse in Connecticut girls' cross-country.
The 1984 team also honors the memory of Coach Hadden and teammate Christine (Pappalardo) Greif, whose spirit and commitment guided the team’s character and remain an enduring part of the Avon Girls Cross Country legacy.
