Taryn Miller-Stevens
As a three-sport varsity athlete at Avon High School from 1999-2003, Taryn Miller-Stevens’ leadership, grit, and passion helped lead the soccer, basketball, and golf programs to the highest levels of success.
Playing four years as a varsity soccer starter, Taryn served as co-captain her senior year. She earned three All-Conference Player Awards (2000, 2001 2002), CGSCA All-State Player Award (2001), Connecticut Soccer Coaches Association All-Star selection (2002), and a Class M State Championship Game MVP Award (2002). Amassing 35 goals and 12 assists in 76 games played, she was a constant catalyst for the Falcons, with an overall record of 64-8-5 during her time. This included three League Championships (2000, 2001, 2002), two State Championships (2001, 2002), and a State Championship Runner-up (2000). These years showcased two full undefeated seasons, a conference undefeated season, a win streak of 40 games, and the #1 Ranked team in Connecticut (Hartford Courant) her final season.
Taryn found success playing basketball and golf as a Falcon, also. She earned three NCCC All-Conference Honors (2001, 2002, 2003) and two All-State Player Awards (2002, 2003) as a captain. As the team’s point guard she set the school record for assists, leading the team to an overall record of 86-15 during her career as the Falcons won the NCCC League and Tournament Championship four years in a row. On the golf course, she served as a team co-captain in ‘03, finishing her career with 10 varsity letters.
In the scholar-athlete tradition, academic excellence and community commitment were an important part of Taryn’s time at AHS. Her senior year included the AHS Senior Leadership Award, serving as Vice President of AHS Student Government, and a Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen Award. Taryn’s community work included raising funds at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and spending weekends as a referee for the Avon Youth Basketball program throughout her years as a Falcon. During the holidays, she also worked part-time at Miller Farms—her family’s fourth generation local business.
Taryn went on to play basketball at Tufts University all four years (2003-2007) for the Jumbos. She earned New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Academic All-Conference accolades throughout her career, while also starting at point guard and leading the team in assists her senior season. Taryn was awarded the Tisch College of Civic Life Scholarship while at Tufts for her commitment to active citizenship. Graduating in 2007 with a BA in American Studies and minor in Entrepreneurial Leadership, she continued to support the Jumbos the following year as an Assistant Coach (2007-2008) when they made an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA DIII Tournament. She is currently Director of Strategic Programs & Growth at Babson College’s Institute for Social Innovation and serves on the board of the Provincetown Commons, a collaborative center for creative and economic development.
With her athletic achievements, team contributions, leadership skills, and dedication to civic work, Taryn exemplifies the goals and aspirations of the athletic programs at AHS. Taryn’s inspiration growing up was her mother, Carolyn Miller, who was a captain of the cheerleading team before Title IX and women’s sports participation was regularly available. Taryn is grateful for the love, support, and attendance at hundreds of games by her parents, family, friends, and community. Today, she is most proud of her wife, two stepsons, and twin toddlers’ commitment to exploring life together and leaving a legacy of lasting impact.
