Ed Roy
Pole vaulter and football offensive/defensive back Ed Roy, class of 1971, left a legacy at Avon High School that, as of this writing, lives on fifty-three years later: his 13’3” pole vault record. Ed was co-captain of the Track & Field team that year and led them to an undefeated (11-0) season; his individual pole-vaulting wins contributed significantly to the team’s overall success. Specifically, in 1970, Ed placed 4th in the State Class M meet and 2nd in State Open Meet. The next year, he was Class M state champion and placed 2nd in State Open meet. In both of those years, he was also named to the All-Conference team. Ed’s three-year career record in regular season meets puts his event dominance in perspective: 29 first place finishes; 4 second place finishes; and 1 third place finish – “legendary,” as one of his nominators’ noted.
Ed also triumphed on the football field where he played offensive and defensive back, scored five career touchdowns, made three career interceptions, and earned All-Conference honors in 1970, his senior season.
Recruited by Tufts University, Ed headed up to Waltham where he vaulted for the Jumbos’ varsity track and field team. After two years, he transferred to and graduated from Babson College, returning to Avon, where he still resides (most of the time) and built a successful construction services business.
Ed walked away from Avon High School with a fair amount of swag (trophies, certificates, honors, etc.) but the best prize from his days as a Falcon, was Peg Harris, class of 1972, who became his bride.
