Jack Trumbull

With a career spanning decades and a versatile coaching portfolio, Jack Trumbull has left an indelible mark on Avon High School Athletics. His journey began on the football field, where he served as the school’s 1st Assistant Football Coach from 1968 to 1990. Working alongside the legendary Head Coach Glen McLellan, he was a primary architect of one of the most successful eras in school history. Together, they orchestrated a school-record 130 victories and secured seven league championships, turning Avon high school into a well respected program in the state of Connecticut

While his football tenure was marked by longevity, his leadership in the wrestling program was defined by dominance. Transitioning from assistant to Head Wrestling Coach in 1972, he led the team through some dominant years that lasted until 1981. Under his guidance, the program achieved a staggering 102-48-3 record. His technical expertise and mentorship resulted in eight Northwest Conference Championships and five Sectional Championships, ultimately sending a decorated roster of individual wrestlers to the State Championships.

Always willing to serve the athletic department wherever needed, his coaching versatility extended well beyond the gridiron and the mat. In the mid-1990s, he transitioned to the diamond as the JV Softball coach and hit the links where he helped start the first Women’s Golf Team. By establishing the foundation for the inaugural golf program, he ensured that female athletes had expanded opportunities to compete and excel.

Throughout his multi-sport career, he exemplified the qualities of a dedicated educator and mentor. Whether he was grinding out a win under Friday night lights or building a new program from the ground up, his commitment to student-athletes remained constant.
