Shara McNeill
Shara Hennessy-McNeill was a three-sport athlete and two-sport captain whose impact on Avon Girls Soccer is unequivocal. A four-year varsity player and senior captain, she was known for her remarkable speed, goal-scoring ability, and leadership. Shara earned All-State and All-New England honors and was a driving force behind the program's success from 1998-2001, graduating as Avon’s all-time leading scorer (now third) and helping launch a three-year championship run and undefeated streak for AHS girl’s soccer.
Although she missed half of her junior season due to a broken collarbone sustained in an AHS game, Shara bounced back to play a pivotal role in the team’s 2001 Class M state championship victory when, in the final seconds, she assisted on the game-winning goal scored by her sister and fellow Falcon Hall of Famer, Kia.
When not on Avon’s pitch, Shara trained and played for the U.S. Region One Olympic Development Team and for the four-time Connecticut state champion Yankee United Rage club team – while running middle distance on Avon’s track and field team for two years and playing on and leading (as senior captain), the Avon Girls Golf team.
Beyond high school, Shara continued to shine. She represented Avon with distinction at Georgetown University, where she quickly became one of the top scorers and playmakers for the program, earning a spot on the Big East All-Rookie team her freshman year and spots on the All-Big East (conference) second and third teams each of the following years. A true team player, she graduated as third all-time in career assists.
After Georgetown, Shara went on to expand her athletic resumé by competing in both flag and full-contact football, earning a spot in the IWFL National Championship in Round Rock, TX with the D.C. Divas in 2009. Now, she is married to and raising two children (Eli and Layla) with the love of her life, Susie in their Haymarket, Va. home. Professionally, Shara has thrived for seven years at Docusign as a Senior Manager of Solution Consulting. Ever the competitor, she has developed a newfound passion for tennis.
